The patented solution Cavimeter ensures the quality of concrete cast rock bolts and forms the basis for collaboration between Nybergs Mekaniska and Malmfälten AB.

Nybergs Mekaniska Verkstad has entered into partnership with consulting and product development company Malmfälten AB. By combining forces the companies aim to boost sales of products developed for mining and rock reinforcement. Malmfälten AB will be responsible for development and marketing and the common goal is to build innovative and strong products that will reach new markets outside the local area. Among the products currently marketed by Malmfälten AB is the Cavimeter – a solution developed to ensure the quality of concrete cast rock reinforcement bolts. The patented technology uses gas pressure to detect potential cavities which may weaken the concrete casting.

1. A hole is drilled to allow the application of a rock bolt.

2. The drill-hole is filled with concrete.

3. A rock bolt equipped with measuring pipe is entered into the drill-hole through the concrete. The rock bolt is anchored to the base of the drill-hole by a wedge, whereupon the nut is tightened, connecting the washer to the mountain.

4. The quality of the rock reinforcement is examined by pressurizing the measurement pipe with an inert gas with a pressure of approximately 2 bar. By registering the pressure drop and time constant, possible cavities and cracks are detected.

T- Our technology streamlines the measurement process. It only takes about 15 seconds per bolt, making it easy to examine a larger number of bolts and thus achieving a much more reliable picture of the quality of the rock and the rock reinforcement, says CEO Sture Åberg, who together with product developer Leif Gustafsson, is launching the Cavimeter in the wider market.
Nyberg Mekaniska has for more than 40 years developed, manufactured and marketed the so-called Kiruna Bolt – a rock reinforcement bolt known for its unique details. The company also specializes in the development of special vehicles for the mining industry. Among the vehicles are trucks for drilling and charging, designed with total operator safety in mind.
Malmfälten AB and Nybergs Mekaniska aim to jointly package and market products developed for safe rock reinforcement on the global market.

- We are very happy that we found a natural partner with long experience of manufacturing rock bolts, special vehicles and other products necessary for modern rock reinforcement, says Leif Gustafsson at Malmfälten AB. In 2011, the companies will launch the already tested combination of Kiruna Bolt and Cavimeter on the mining and tunnel construction market within and outside the Nordic countries.

- Our Kiruna Bolt has long been a strong product within the field of rock reinforcement. Combined with Malmfälten’s Cavimeter we step into the most modern principles of rock reinforcement and safety, says Anita Fors, partner at Nybergs Mekaniska.
