Dan Ek, CEO of Galvteknik i Norr AB commented: “Through our new partner, we gain access to much greater sales opportunities, both to existing customers and to new customers via Nybergsgruppen.”
The company currently has five employees and a permit to carry out hot dip galvanizing of 4000 tonnes of products per year. By strengthening its sales capabilities the company aims to deliver more to both existing and new markets in northern Scandinavia. The selling shareholder, Jokkmokks Allmänning AB, was founded as a measure to support the local economy of Jokkmokk. By remaining part owner of Galvteknik AB the company will continue to support employment in Jokkmokk but opens up for the possibility that Nybergs Mekaniska will bail out the company in the future. Christian Rimpi of Jokkmokks Allmänning AB said: “The future of Jokkmokk’s industrial sector looks promising, thanks to the current growth in the Malmfälten. Through Nybergs Mekaniska further opportunities for positive development are created, and we very much welcome this business start-up in Jokkmokk.”

The acquisition complements Nybergs Mekaniska’s overall service offering and strengthens the company’s geographical presence in Norrbotten and the new Malmfälten.

Niklas Pääjärvi, Co-owner of Nybergs Mekaniska Verkstad, commented: “Galvteknik AB is the only company in Norrbotten performing hot dip galvanizing and it is important for the sector that this service remains in the county. From our perspective, it is important that this company is now part of Nybergsgruppen.”

Nybergsgruppen, comprised of Nybergs Mekaniska Verkstad AB, Nybergs Mekaniska Verkstad in Piteå AB, and AB Dahlberg & Roos, has approximately 135 employees and annual turnover of SEK 200 million. The group also co-owns wagon manufacturer Kiruna Wagon and technology consulting firm Malmfälten AB.

Kiruna Wagon signs major order for ore wagons with Northland Resources

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Kiruna Wagon has signed an order for 150 iron ore wagons with international mining company Northland Resources. The wagons are scheduled for delivery between January 1, 2013 and May 5, 2014.

Thomas Persson, Chairman Kiruna Wagon (left), Karl-Axel Waplan, CEO Northland Resources (middle) and Niklas Pääjärvi, Co-owner Kiruna Wagon (right).

“With this order we consolidate our position as a top supplier to modern mining companies that demand cost-effective ore transport solutions of world-class,” says Fredrik Kangas, Operations Manager at Kiruna Wagon. The wagons, which load approximately 98 tonnes, will transport ore concentrate of the pellet feed type from Northland’s transshipment terminal in Pitkäjärvi in Sweden, to the ice-free port of Narvik in Norway, a distance of 226 kilometres.

Constructed mainly of high-strength steels, with a yield strength of 700 MPa, the wagons have a low tare weight to maximize payload. Malmbanan’s maximum permitted axle load is 30 tonnes.

Based on technology that is well-tried on the Malmbanan railway, the wagon has a loading cube which is different from the one co-produced by Kiruna Wagon for LKAB. Due to the fine particle size of Northland Resources’ magnetite concentrate, 80% of the product passing 40 micron, bottom discharge is not practical and therefore a basket turning solution has been chosen instead. When emptying, the loading cube is rotated 148 degrees while the frame remains on the rails. The rotation, along with the round shape of the loading cube, creates optimal conditions for effective discharge.

Northland’s order comprises 150 wagons (75 short-coupled units) which will run on 500 metre long trains. The contract was signed on April 12, 2012, at a news conference in Stockholm. The first wagons are scheduled to be in service on Malmbanan in early 2013.

“We are proud to be involved in managing and refining the Swedish mining heritage. Together with Northland Resources, we are building the New Malmfälten,” concludes Fredrik Kangas.

The patented solution Cavimeter ensures the quality of concrete cast rock bolts and forms the basis for collaboration between Nybergs Mekaniska and Malmfälten AB.

Nybergs Mekaniska Verkstad has entered into partnership with consulting and product development company Malmfälten AB. By combining forces the companies aim to boost sales of products developed for mining and rock reinforcement. Malmfälten AB will be responsible for development and marketing and the common goal is to build innovative and strong products that will reach new markets outside the local area. Among the products currently marketed by Malmfälten AB is the Cavimeter – a solution developed to ensure the quality of concrete cast rock reinforcement bolts. The patented technology uses gas pressure to detect potential cavities which may weaken the concrete casting.
illus_cavimeter

1. A hole is drilled to allow the application of a rock bolt.

2. The drill-hole is filled with concrete.

3. A rock bolt equipped with measuring pipe is entered into the drill-hole through the concrete. The rock bolt is anchored to the base of the drill-hole by a wedge, whereupon the nut is tightened, connecting the washer to the mountain.

4. The quality of the rock reinforcement is examined by pressurizing the measurement pipe with an inert gas with a pressure of approximately 2 bar. By registering the pressure drop and time constant, possible cavities and cracks are detected.

T- Our technology streamlines the measurement process. It only takes about 15 seconds per bolt, making it easy to examine a larger number of bolts and thus achieving a much more reliable picture of the quality of the rock and the rock reinforcement, says CEO Sture Åberg, who together with product developer Leif Gustafsson, is launching the Cavimeter in the wider market.
Nyberg Mekaniska has for more than 40 years developed, manufactured and marketed the so-called Kiruna Bolt – a rock reinforcement bolt known for its unique details. The company also specializes in the development of special vehicles for the mining industry. Among the vehicles are trucks for drilling and charging, designed with total operator safety in mind.
Malmfälten AB and Nybergs Mekaniska aim to jointly package and market products developed for safe rock reinforcement on the global market.

- We are very happy that we found a natural partner with long experience of manufacturing rock bolts, special vehicles and other products necessary for modern rock reinforcement, says Leif Gustafsson at Malmfälten AB. In 2011, the companies will launch the already tested combination of Kiruna Bolt and Cavimeter on the mining and tunnel construction market within and outside the Nordic countries.

- Our Kiruna Bolt has long been a strong product within the field of rock reinforcement. Combined with Malmfälten’s Cavimeter we step into the most modern principles of rock reinforcement and safety, says Anita Fors, partner at Nybergs Mekaniska.

Kiruna Wagon to produce underground wagons for LKAB’s new main level

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

Kiruna Wagon AB has received an order to produce 121 iron ore cars for LKAB’s new main level, located on 1365 meters. The ore cars are expected to transport more than 30 million tonnes crude ore annually, from the ore passes to the crushing plant and hoisting station.

- Choosing Kiruna Wagon as our supplier feels very natural. It is all about price and competence. They also did a very good job delivering over 800 Pellets Wagon F 050, which operate the Narvik and Luleå routes, says Thomas Nordström, Project Manager at LKAB.

The new iron ore cars will be produced between 2011-2015 and means another long-term project for Kiruna Wagon.

- Having the continued confidence from the world’s most modern underground mine, with the highest requirements in all its processes, of course means a lot to us, says Fredrik Kangas, Local Manager at Kiruna Wagon. The order enables us to continue develop local specialist competence  and a Kiruna-based company with export potential can further expand and develop.

Kiruna Wagon has since 2004 been rebuilding, repairing and producing ore cars for LKAB and Boliden. Among the assignments is the repair and upgrade of the preceding generation of underground ore cars for LKAB. Like the previous model, the new underground wagon is loaded through the ore pass chute and emptied through bottom discharge, which opens the entire bottom of the wagon in a discharge curve.

The solution is based on proven techniques and the challenge for us lies mainly in efficient processes and an optimal use of our knowledge of high strength steels and quality, explains Kangas.

The new business deal means that Kiruna Wagon AB has been behind all wagon production for the mining industry in the region since the start 2004. Fourteen bidders took part in LKAB’s procurement process – a clear proof that Kiruna Wagon fares well in international competition.

Bench-blasting charging vehicles when LKAB opens new iron ore mines

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

During spring 2010, by assignment from LKAB’s daughter company KIMIT AB, Nybergs Mekaniska will be building a charging vehicle for bench blasting of downward vertical drill holes.

palladdning

The production of the new charging vehicle gets underway as LKAB plans to open three new mines to the southeast, in the neighboring Svappavaara area. For the first time in over 50 years, LKAB will be opening a new iron-ore mine, being the first open-pit mine since the 1980’s. The three deposits in Gruvberget, Leveäniemi and Mertainen hold together about 300 million tons of iron ore. Learn more about the project on LKAB’s website.

The construction behind the new charging vehicle is a tried and trusted solution and the goal is to additionally optimize the system together with the buyer KIMIT AB.

As usual, efficiency and safety are the focus of the construction work. The charging vehicle, to be used in open-pit mining, will load about 15 tons of emulsion and additives. As a safety precaution, these additives and blended during the pumping process and therefore do not build a complete blasting substance until they are well on their way down the drill hole.

Another safety detail is the charge vehicle’s emulsion tank made of aluminum. In the event of a fire, the tank deforms so that openings are formed. In this way, the probability of an explosion decreases considerably, due to avoiding exposing the emulsion to the critical combination of high temperature and pressure.

The carrier is a Volvo FH 13 8×4.

NYB_Anna-Karin_Kenth_vald_web

”All vehicle development is steered by specific demands. This project doesn’t contain the challenge of long transport distances or underground limits, which is why we can place all focus on operation safety and quality”, says constructor and project manager Kenth Mukka.

“The close cooperation with Nyberg Mekaniska gives us the conditions to follow the project close up. It will also be easier to follow-up and get feed-back for developing future versions of charging vehicles”, says Anna-Karin Mäki-Ylivainio, Project manager at KIMIT AB. KIMIT AB is one of Sweden’s leading companies within explosives and explosive techniques.

With our Compact Crane 4000 we acheive both small built-in dimensions and large work areas. The crane is very compact and specially developed for restricted areas and demanding environments such as mines and rock work. The construction is a folding boom on a slew with two projections, reaching up to 9.5 meters fully extended. For work above ground, it can be dimensioned for considerably larger work areas. The crane is certified in accordance with SS-EN 280. The stainless steel work basked is equipped with a hydraulic safety roof. In this case, they are both integrated on a blasting vehicle we built for LKAB.

- The task was both exiting an challenging. To find the best balance between small built-in dimensions, large work area and a true heavy duty feel. We are proud of the result and I’m sure this crane will stand the test of time, says Kenth Mukka, constructor and project manager.
